Summer Packing List

During summer the UCPA has a wide variety of courses, therefore the packing list will vary depending on the course, the sport and the location. Below is a rough guide to what will be provided as part of the packages and what you will need to pack for yourself.

Provided Equipment

All hardware and safety kit required to complete your course will be provided. Depending on your course activities the kit is likely to include:

Mountaineering courses: B2/3 boots, crampons, harness, rope, helmet, ice axe, hardware, backpack

Rock Climbing courses: climbing shoes, harness, rope, belay device, carabiners, helmet, backpack

Mountain Biking courses: Mountain bike (on select courses, please check course descriptions or contact us) helmet, body armour

Surfing/windsurfing/sailing courses: wetsuit, surf board/windsurf board, life jacket

Refuge stays: If your course requires overnight stays outside of the UCPA centres, for example in a mountain refuge, you will be provided with a sleeping bag, but you will need your own sleeping bag liner. Also, be aware that in some refuges, the only water is bottled water and you will be required to pay for this. Some showers in some refuges will also be extra. If you are staying in Swiss refuges, you may need Swiss Francs, as not all Swiss refuges accept euros.  

Personal clothing & kit Required

The personal clothing and kit required for your trip will depend on the course, the location and sport. The weather can be unpredictable, especially in the mountains, so we advise to pack for all eventualities. Below is a rough guide of what you may need.

Mountaineering courses:

  • Base layers - breathable sports tops, thermal top & bottoms
  • Warm mid layers - fleece, thin down jacket & walking trousers/climbing trousers.
  • Waterproof outer layers e.g packable Goretex jacket & trousers
  • Gaiters
  • Hut liner/sleeping bag liner (or small sleeping bag) for hut stays
  • Thermal ski socks, hat & gloves
  • Sun hat & good quality sunglasses
  • Head torch and spare batteries 
  • Trekking poles (not essential, but useful for comfort) 
  • Backpack liner (e.g. bin liner) to protect belongings inside backpack

Trekking Courses 

  • It is suggested that you pack as above for mountaineering, please keep in mind that the weather can be very changeable and you will benefit from lots of layers 
  • Hiking boots are provided for most activities but you may wish to bring your own 
  • For some courses you may wish to bring gaiters particularly for the start of season 
  • Sandals, flip flops or lighter shoes for time not spent on the trails

Rock Climbing courses:

  • Climbing trousers/sports top & trousers (allows easy movement)
  • Warm & waterproof layers
  • Sturdy shoes/trainers for walking between climbing areas – this can include in the mountains
  • Sun hat & good quality sunglasses
  • Warm hat and light gloves

Mountain Biking courses:

  • Comfortable sports clothing – shorts & tops (long sleeves may be preferable)
  • Biking specific shorts (padded inners for courses with long rides)
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Biking gloves
  • Trainers or special biking shoes (not clips) UCPA bikes come with standard flat pedals, if you wish to bring your own clipless pedals please feel free
  • Good quality sunglasses
  • Backpack for carrying water, snacks, layers etc.
  • Hydration pack/water bottle

Trail Running Courses 

  • Base layers - breathable sports tops, thermal top & bottoms
  • Warm mid layers - fleece, thin down jacket & running tights/leggings
  • Waterproof outer layers e.g packable Goretex jacket
  • Sun hat & good quality sunglasses
  • Trekking poles (not essential, but useful for comfort) 
  • 2 or 3 pairs of trail running shoes
  • A pair of running trainers suitable for all terrain
  • A pair of light gloves

Surfing, Windsurfing, Kitesurfing, Sea Kayaking and Sailing courses:

  • Swimwear
  • Shoes or trainers for the water
  • Sun hat & good quality sunglasses
  • Beach towels
  • Rash vest for under wetsuit (personal preference)
  • Sports clothing – short & t-shirt​
  • Warm layers and Waterproof/windproof outerwear
  • Clothing that is easy to change into from your ​sports kit
  • Insect repellent

Yacht Sailing courses:

Please make sure you pack your belongings in a soft bag such as a duffel bag rather then a hard bag or suitcase so that they can be easily stowed. 

  • Light sleeping bag or bed sheet
  • A pillow
  • Non-slip closed shoes such as trainers
  • Head torch or hand torch
  • Warm layers and Waterproof/windproof outerwear​
  • Swimwear - you may also wish to bring a snorkel if you have one 
  • Sports clothing – short & t-shirt
  • Good quality sunglasses & sun hat (appropriate for sailing)
  • Beach towels
  • Insect repellent

Please remember the weather can be very variable, it is best to check the forecast before you leave and pack accordingly however you should also ensure that you have suitable waterproof clothing in case of rain.  

Scuba Diving courses:

  • Swimwear
  • Clothing that is easy to change into from your diving kit
  • Beach towels
  • Sunglasses and hat
  • Warm layers and Waterproof/windproof outerwear
  • Shoes or trainers for the water
  • A pair of trainers, or hiking shoes
  • a small back pack
  • If you are travelling early or late in the season you might wish to bring diving shoes that are compatible with fins and diving gloves
  • Dive computers are not included in the package, you can either bring your own or hire one onsite
  • The centre will need to see a medical certificate that shows you are fit to dive

Other Essential Items:

  • Towel (bedding is provided but towels are not provided)
  • French plug adapter for your phone & laptop charger
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses (minimum cat 3 protection for mountain sports)
  • Travel Insurance & EHIC card
  • Passport
  • Ear plugs (useful for a shared dorm)
  • Padlock for room locker
  • Water bottle (for room & during sports) or hydration pack
  • Mobile phone & charger (check it works while abroad)
  • UCPA security deposit – 100 euros
  • Debit/credit card – in case of emergency
  • Swimwear (beach or pool)
  • Sports kit & trainers/hiking shoes for evening/free day activities/exploring
  • Toiletries & hairdryer
  • Personal first aid kit
  • Insect repellent 
  • Small tupperware container for picnic salads (​in some resorts e.g. Chamonix or Argentiere) a small bowl and plastic cutlery 
  • If you are on a high-energy activity course, you may want an extra supply of energy bars (some will be provided)

Several weeks before travel you will be sent an email with information you may require for your holiday including packing list, travel arrangements and the UCPA address. Please read this information carefully. If you don't receive the holiday details email contact us. Remember if you are arriving after 8pm you should contact the UCPA centre in advance to arrange access to the centre and room keys. This information is covered in the Holiday Details email.
