Summer is one of the best times to visit the Alps, arguably better than winter, depending on what sports you like to practice… although we may be shot for saying such a thing!
We’ve been steadily promoting the concept of summer ski resort holidays for quite some time now, and for good reason! Last month, we decided to bring Becca, a running and outdoors content creator, along to join in on a UCPA summer climbing course to see how she enjoyed the experience (and hopefully would recommend it!). Needless to say, she had a brilliant week shared some great insight into a week at UCPA.
What Becca had to say about her stay:
“Last week, I had the most incredible time learning to rock climb and ice climb with Action Outdoors. I have been loving indoor climbing lately, and this was the perfect opportunity to gain the skills and techniques required to start outdoor climbing and gain self-sufficiency!
I have always wanted to try ice climbing as well, and it did not disappoint. All in all, an incredible week with awesome people, and the views of my dreams. So excited for more mountain adventures this summer.”
So, what exactly is involved in a UCPA Rock & Ice Climbing course?
Our Rock & Ice Climbing programme is ideal for a first immersion in the mountain environment, including rock climbing, ice climbing and walking on glaciers. This itinerary offers a unique opportunity to experience both outdoor climbing and ice climbing in one trip. Perfect for the gym climber looking to graduate onto real rock and crack open the world of the high mountains. Of course, a good level of fitness is required to join this course; otherwise, it is open to all levels, whether you are a beginner or have done some climbing before.
Learn to lead climb or boulder outdoors, figure out how to walk (safely) in crampons, navigating a glacier and try your hand at ice climbing!
What is the set-up like for solo travellers?
UCPA trips are already an excellent set-up for solo travellers thanks to their sociable nature, any week in any centre. With icebreaker activities and a welcome drink with your group when you arrive, as well as spending a week learning new skills in a close-knit group, there is ample opportunity to meet new people and forge ‘belay-tionships’ with your new climbing buddies!
What is the natural progression from this course?
Each climbing and mountaineering course offers something different. Some focus on bagging summits, some more so on technical skills, but all with the aim of bringing participants closer to self-sufficiency in the mountains. The fun part about the Rock & Ice Climbing programme is that you get a balance of the high mountain environment whilst also soaking up the sun and playing around on the rock of a sunny valley crag. From here, you can decide whether you want to progress in your cragging skills or if you have summit goals in mind (both is obviously the best answer!).
If you’ve read this far and are keen to grab a place, mark your calendars for January 2026 as we launch next summer’s alpine season!
